ACT Test Taking Tips

Week of April 18-24 2011

On regular tests given in school students are taught to bubble in their Scantron one question at a time.  On the ACT this is a TIME WASTER!  A student can save three to five minutes per test section by bubbling in answers one page at a time.  This allows students to have more time to answer more questions resulting in a higher score.

REMAIN CALM!  That is right just REMAIN CALM!  An aspect of the ACT which decreases the score of most students is that they do not remain calm on the ACT.  Many experience moderate to severe test anxiety which negatively impacts their performance.  No matter what happens there is simply no time on the ACT to "freak out."  When you start to feel anxiety overcoming you do this:

1. Put you pencil down

2. Close your eyes

3. Breathe in and out slowly

4. Go back to the test

For many students doing this for 10 to 20 seconds puts them in a relaxed state and they are ready to go back to the test.
